The wait is nearly over for Kmart fans in Mareeba as Target Country in Walsh Street is set to be closed and reopened as a Kmart Hub.

Target Mareeba is set to close its doors on January 30 with Kmart conversion works set to start two days later. A Kmart spokesperson said they plan on opening the revamped store on Wednesday, February 17 at 8am.

While Target Atherton will close on January 23,  some Atherton staff have picked up jobs at the soon to be opened Kmart in Mareeba.

Retail Director of Kmart Australia and New Zealand John Gualtieri said the new Kmart Hub can also be used to pick up Target items. “We’ll be using our hub store as a collection point for online Target orders too; giving customers easy access to two of our key Kmart Group brands,” he said.

“As a business, we’re committed to opening stores in new communities; and we can’t wait to welcome the community of Mareeba to our brand-new concept K Hub store.”

Mr Gualtieri said the new store may look a little different to what people expect from Kmart. “We’re giving the store a ‘light touch’ makeover for now, so that we’re not inconveniencing the community with a long store closure,” he said.

“We want our customers to have easy access to the items they need, which is why we’re focusing on speed to market. But we have big plans to evolve the look and feel of this store over time.

“For now, we’ve taken our most popular Kmart products across kids, home and clothing; and brought them to life in a new way. A collection inspired for a smaller format store, with bigger convenience in mind.”

Mr Gualtieri said there will still be familiar faces at the new store. “You’ll be welcomed into store with some familiar faces. 19 Target team members have joined our growing Kmart family (including 3 from Target Atherton) and we are thrilled to have been able to recruit another 7 team members from the local community.”

The Kmart hub in Mareeba will employ a total of 26 local people and weather permitting the new store will open on February 17.
