CROYDON will now have fresh produce and less water waste with their new Aquaponics Centre now available for the community to access.

Aquaponics is a sustainable way to grow food by using the waste produce of farmed fish or other aquatic life to supply nutrients to the plants being grown.

Children and their carers from Croydon After School Care were the first to visit the centre on February 18 with other community members following later that afternoon to see the town's exciting new innovation.

CEO of Northern Gulf Resource Management Group Zoe Williams says this is a big step in sustainable agriculture.

“This project was started due to having very limited supply of local fresh food in Croydon and this is the response for much needed food security,” she said.

“The centre is open to volunteers in the community who can take home some fresh produce at the end of the day,

“The system is very water efficient by recycling water, with 120 black brim (fish) providing the main source of nutrients to keep it going.”

The Aquaponic centre was built in partnership with the Tagalaka Aboriginal Corporation who will be taking over when the program ends in June.

“When the program finishes, the aboriginal community will take over and maybe start up their own business and employ locals to sell fresh produce at a reasonable price.” Ms Williams said.

Community members who visited the centre were treated with a sausage sizzle and fresh produce harvested straight from the aquaponics garden.

The project is funded by a Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding arrangement with funding contributions from the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Community Development program.
