Five youths caught with stolen motorbikes
Aaron Jonsson the owner of 2 Wheels said the crime problem in Mareeba was getting out of control.
In the early hours of ANZAC Day, when most people were getting ready to light up the dawn, five youths allegedly entered motorcycle shop, 2 Wheels’n’Wear on Byrnes street and stole money, several motorbike helmets and three motorbikes.
Aaron Jonsson the owner of 2 Wheels said the crime problem in Mareeba was getting out of control.
“There have been nine break-ins to four different motorcycle shops this year, it’s getting out of hand,” he said
“Cynthia (Lui) held a round table meeting a few weeks ago at the council and nothing has been done since,
“It’s the same story all time, police catch them they get a slap on the wrist and then they’re back on the streets committing the same crimes.”
It’s believed that the youths were between the ages of 11 and 15-years of age and were charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter premise and trespassing.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Devine Said that “The business had good security measures in place but the quick actions of the informant in contacting Police led to the early arrest of the juveniles,” he said
“Businesses are reminded that it is important to maintain good security of their premises and if possible to have alarms and/or working security cameras in place,
“A good quality CCTV system is a great tool to assist police in apprehending offenders quickly.”
Five youths have been charged with a number of property offences and are scheduled to attend the Children’s court.
