From July 1 ratepayers within the Mareeba Shire Council local government area will be slugged with a $9 per Ute load domestic green waste fee at all the shires waste stations.

Taking effect on July 1, this new fee was adopted at the recent council meeting ensuring that those who dispose of green waste will help offset the costs of managing it.

Domestic green waste delivered to transfer stations by commercial contractors will continue to attract the commercial rate.

Residents will also be offered three free domestic green waste disposal opportunities per year at all waste transfer stations on dates yet to be confirmed.

Mayor Angela Toppin said the fee would help offset the costs incurred with managing green waste.

“The cost of having the green waste mulched and appropriately managed have increased and while ratepayers have previously subsidised these costs, we believe a user pays model is more appropriate,” Cr Toppin said.

“The new fee effectively means those who dispose of the green waste will help meet the costs required for it to be managed, which is more appropriate and reduces the burden on ratepayers in general.

“Council's goal remains to keep charges as low as possible and deliver the best possible service for all ratepayers.”
