The massive collection of Herberton mining history has recently been recognized and acknowledged by the State Library of Queensland after the Herberton Mining Museum won the prestigious ‘John Oxley Library Community History Award’.

The award recognizes excellence and innovation in the preservation, recording and sharing of Queensland history by community organizations.

The Herberton Mining Museum has stood strong for over 15 years and the hardworking volunteers who work there are always happy to help any curious explorer whether they be a tourist or local.

The heritage-listed Great Northern Mine site serves as the center piece for the Museum which is one of the most intact historic mines in Queensland, the collection then grew overtime with donations and the museum now even houses the Horan Notebooks from the first pioneering surveyor to arrive in Herberton in 1880.

TRC Councillor Annette Haydon is extremely proud to have a local museum like the Herberton Historic Museum win such a coveted award.

“It feels so incredible and was totally unexpected,” she said.

“The volunteers at the museum work so hard and are so dedicated; they continually strive for improvement and are constantly updating their personal skills.

“They are determined to make the museum a flagship for the Tableland and North Queensland.”

Herberton is known for its historic value and its deeply rooted connection to its past history in a time of prospectors and miners, and all of this rich history can be experienced through museums like the Herberton Mining Museum.
