The Tablelands and Gulf country will swelter through one of the hottest weekends of the year with temps set to reach the 40’s in some areas.

Georgetown is expected to hit 40 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday.

Mareeba will hit around 37 degrees and Atherton around 34 degrees.

Mossman and the Daintree will also hit 39 and 40 degrees respectively on Saturday.

According to the Bureau’s of Meteorology's website “Low-intensity heatwave conditions are forecast over the interior district of WA, western and northern QLD and most of NT. Severe heatwave conditions are forecast near the northern NT/QLD border and eastern parts of the Top End. An area of extreme heatwave conditions is forecast to impact near the far northern NT/QLD border near the Gulf and also inland around Townsville in Queensland”

Forecaster Rosa Hoff told the Express “With the weak upper trough starting to move away, the showers will slowly start to dissipate and temps will start to rise”

"The average temperature for this time of year is 31 in Cairns, 32 in Cooktown and 31 in Mareeba."

DAINTREE VILLAGE - Saturday: 40/Sunday: 38

PALMERVILLE - Saturday: 36/Sunday: 37

BURKETOWN - Saturday: 44/Sunday: 43

Some showers are expected to return on Monday
