Local businesswoman finalist in AusMumpreneur Awards
A local businesswoman has been named as a finalist for the National AusMumpreneur Awards.
A local businesswoman has been named as a finalist for the National AusMumpreneur Awards.
Heidi Jonsson of Norsafe has been named as a finalist for the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards in two categories: Regional Business Excellence and as the Ausmumpreneur of the year.
The annual AusMumpreneur awards are presented by The Women’s Business School to celebrate and recognize Australian mums in business who are achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation.
Heidi was born in Herberton, raised in Ravenshoe and was living in Mareeba when she started her business 10 years ago while working at the Mareeba Sugar Mill.
“One of the guys suggested I do all the testing and tagging at the mill because the guys hated doing it. So I got my qualifications from TAFE and it took off from there.” Heidi said.
Starting in 2010 Heidi built her business from the ground up and Norsafe now employs up to 8 people, doing testing and tagging, RCD testing, thermal imaging and appliance repairs.
“I have a passion for workplace safety and making sure everyone goes home every night, which is mainly due to the death of my 5-year-old stepbrother on the farm when we were children.”
“Test and tag is an opportunity for me to do my bit to prevent workplace deaths and injuries.
“My team is mostly women; we have our own challenges being mothers or partners. I’m so proud of my team; we all lift each other up and pitch in to get the job done for our customers.”
Heidi admits that starting a business in a male-dominated industry had its challenges. “When I started my business 10 years ago the industry didn’t have a great reputation however, my biggest supporters have been local electricians.”
“We are providing a very important but niche business.”
Heidi said there are benefits to balancing business and motherhood. “Being my own boss has allowed me to have choices and control over my day. I love that my hard work has allowed our family to enjoy many things that would typically be out of reach. My team and I have proven that no matter your age or gender, you can achieve amazing things.”
While starting your own business can be challenging Heidi has advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise. “Just go for it! Pick something you love, something that you’d do gladly for free. Don’t pick something just for the money, because in no time you’ll resent it. Jump in and have a go and wing it along the way.”
“I'm so proud that I'm able to provide several families each week with an income and lifestyle job, and I had zero background in this field.
“Owning and running your own business is one of the most challenging yet most rewarding things you can do, but remember, nothing worthwhile is easy!”
The winners of the 2020 AusMumpreneur Awards will be announced at an online event in September.
