The beautification of Byrnes Street could be fast-tracked due to current COVID-19 conditions affecting Mareeba.

The town beautification project was planned to commence in July after the Rodeo and following completion of the Railway Avenue car park.

However, the Mareeba Rodeo Association announced last month that the this year’s event has been cancelled, which would allow The Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) to start the project ahead of schedule.

A written statement from Mayor Angela Toppin explained “While the COVID-19 restrictions have resulted in community events being cancelled and less traffic on the road, this presents the opportunity for Council to reschedule existing projects to take advantage of the quieter months ahead,” Cr Toppin said

"We are looking at opportunities to change our planned start dates for some projects to minimise disruption to residents and business owners.”

Mayor Toppin says that construction start times may change in response to COVID-19 restrictions “We are considering swapping the construction start dates for Railway Avenue car park upgrade with the Byrnes Street beautification works as there is less traffic in Byrnes Street at the moment," she said

“The upgrade of the Railway Avenue car park in Mareeba was scheduled to be completed in time for the arrival of the grey nomads. However, as the Christmas in July event has been cancelled, the commencement of this project could be deferred to a later date, “If we carry out the Byrnes Street works sooner rather than later we will be able to minimise the impact on businesses and have the main street looking good for when businesses can get back to normal trading after COVID-19,” Cr Toppin said.

A final decision has not been made however Council says that they will consult with relevant stakeholders before works commence.
