Member for Cook Cynthia Lui dropped into Mareeba last week for one of her monthly mobile office meetings.

Ms Lui set up her mobile office out front of the Mareeba IGA to give local residents a chance to chat with their local member.

Ms Lui said that constituents had been approaching her with a number of issues, “We have been talking about a wide range of issues, including COVID, jobs and financial support," she said

“The advantage of having a mobile office is having those off the cuff conversations with everyone,

“Over the past 6 months everyone right across the Cook electorate wants to talk about COVID, Cook is a vast electorate and doing mobile offices is really important.”

Ms Lui said that keeping the border closed was an important issue currently facing Queensland communities.

“Queensland has done really well; we have kept the numbers down, especially compared to Victoria and NSW,”

“We need to celebrate what we have achieved but these hard measures need to be kept in place to keep Queenslanders safe.”

Another issue facing Cook at the moment was the increase in youth crime, something that Ms Lui tried to address with a round table meeting at the beginning of the year.

“The meeting was to identify the stakeholders involved and the people who are receiving funding to establish our network,” she said

“We identified that there are not enough recreation facilities for kids, since the meeting I have had a lot of conversations to see how we can better facilitate that process,

“I’ve had conversations with the PCYC; I’ve also had conversations with the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and the Council about security cameras to increase safety for all residents,

“But these things just don’t happen overnight.”
