THE Mareeba District Cricket Club held a grand opening for their newly refurbished canteen last Saturday.

The canteen, named the ‘Frosty Firth’ canteen, was attended by prominent members of the community including councillors, life time members, players and ex-players of Mareeba Cricket.

Frosty Firth was an integral part of Mareeba cricket and was influential in its progress and growth through the years.

To honour and commemorate his accomplishments and improvements for cricket in Mareeba, the new canteen has been named after him.

The canteen was officially opened by Member for Cook Cynthia Lui whose election promise allowed the Mareeba Cricket Club to secure $90,000 for the upgrade.

Mayor Tom Gilmore was also present and assisted in the opening while acknowledging the hard work and dedication shown by the Mareeba Cricket Club committee and its president Irene Roy.

The opening was followed by the first cricket match of the season.
