Cairns police were called to a two vehicle traffic crash on the Redlynch Bypass Road, Redlynch at 8.40am today.

Police allege a 67-year-old Mossman man was driving a concrete truck when his vehicle collided into the rear of a Toyota utility driven by a 62-year-old Redlynch man.

Police allege the truck driver was using a CB radio when he came over a rise and saw a line of traffic stopped and banked up.

It’s further alleged the man braked, locked up and skidded as he tried to manoeuvre his heavy vehicle around the stationary traffic.

The truck collided with a metal guard rail and tipped, blocking both lanes of traffic. The highway was closed for approximately two hours during the heavy vehicle recovery. Both men were conveyed to the Cairns Hospital for treatment and observation.

The 67-year-old truck driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for driving without due care and fined $522 with three demerit points.

Investigating officer, Senior Constable Bartlett from the Cairns Road Policing Unit said distraction is a major cause for traffic crashes.

“All motorists are reminded to slow down in wet weather, drive to current road conditions and pay attention to the road ahead,” Senior Constable Bartlett said
