Road accidents claim lives in Far North
THREE road accidents claimed the lives of three people yesterday around the Far North.
An 82-year-old Atherton man died following a traffic crash about halfway between Malanda and Atherton yesterday around 9.45am.
Preliminary investigations indicate the man was driving a 2010 Holden Colorado utility in a north-easterly direction along Knowles Road, when a collision occurred at the intersection of Malanda-Atherton Road, involving a 2003 Citroen 3 hatch, driven by a 74-year-old Malanda woman, who was travelling in a westerly direction.
The man suffered critical injuries and was transported to Atherton Hospital where he has since passed away.
The woman sustained serious injuries and is in a stable condition in Atherton Hospital.
Forensic Crash Unit investigators are appealing for witnesses to the collision, especially those with dashcam footage to come forward.
Around 12.40pm yesterday, a male driver of a utility died after a collision with a large waste disposal truck just outside Kuranda, near Black Mountain Road.
The man was driving a utility outbound from Cairns toward Kuranda along the Kennedy Highway when the collision occurred with the truck which was being driven in an easterly direction toward Cairns by a 48-year-old Mount Sheridan man.
The driver of the utility died at the scene. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries only.
Forensic Crash Unit investigations are continuing.
Last night, a 39-year-old Diwan man died following a single vehicle traffic crash that happened along Cape Tribulation Road.Initial investigations indicate that around 9.50pm, a car travelling along Cape Tribulation Road in Diwan crashed into a fixed road sign.
The man, who was the sole occupant of the car was located deceased at the scene.The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
