The male had withdrawn a sum of money from the ATM when another person grabbed the cash from his hands as it was being counted.

The suspect made off along Byrnes Street, north towards Jacobsen Street. Mareeba CIB are making inquiries regarding the identity of the suspect and have requested assistance from the community regarding the incident which occurred around midday on 10 February.

Acting Inspector Campbell said the theft was a timely reminder to be vigilant around financial institutions and ATMs, particularly when in possession of sums of cash.

“There may be an opportunity for the community to rethink the need to utilise cash in transactions, particularly with safer cashless options available,” he said.

Any information regarding this incident can be made to PoliceLink (131444) or CrimeStoppers (1300 333 000), online, or to Mareeba Police.
