The Express Newspaper has been caught up in a Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) dare, without even realising it.

This year the TRC decided to rename The 'TRC Community Christmas Appeal' to the ‘Mayors Community Christmas appeal.’

TRC Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew said that at the time he sent out an email to his fellow councillors writing that “If we could get a photo of Mayor Rod Marti smiling in Santa hat for the newly renamed appeal I would contribute 20 dollars of my own money to the appeal,” he said.

“I put that in an email to all the other councillors and it just rolled on from there with all the councillors agreeing.”

In the November 18 edition of The Express we ran the story on the launch of the Mayors 2020 Christmas appeal.

At the time TRC Mayor Rod Marti said “Not everyone has money to spare at Christmas time and some just have trouble making ends meet,” he said.

“With a small donation to the Mayor’s Community Christmas Appeal you can make a difference to people and families in need, donations will be used to provide food vouchers to people in need in our community.”

For the story Mayor Rod Marti agreed to wear a Santa hat and a big smile.

It’s was something that came as a surprise to all the TRC councillors “The Mayor’s first response to my email was that he wouldn’t do it and then when we saw him in The Expressit was a great surprise,” Cr Cardew said

“He did it without our knowledge so on Thursday’s council meeting we were all happy to pay up.”

As a result of the photo $165 dollars in total was donated by TRC councillors at last Thursday’s council meeting.
