A workshop for herding and stock dogs is happening again this September at the Mareeba rodeo grounds.

This will be the ninth year the workshops have taken place, with two three day workshops being held over the upcoming school holidays.

The workshops cover everything from starting a young puppy, up to older dogs and working with sheep, goats and cattle.

Koolie club of Australia Secretary Kylie Wilson said they are run over the holidays to get families involved in the workshops.

“We run them over the school holidays to allow families to come up and stay, especially people from stations who want to come and stay in town for a few days,” she said.

“People can camp at the rodeo grounds where we are holding the workshops.

“We’ve also had people come back for a few years in a row, either with their new dogs or just to refine their skills.

“You will learn everything from how you stand to body language and voice commands.”

Kylie said the workshops are for dogs working on stations and properties but working dog breeds that belong to suburban herders are also welcome to attend.

“We have a lot of people who have a working dog in their backyards and they want to learn more,” she said.

“The workshops don’t just train the dogs but the owners as well.

“I’ve been to every workshop and I’m still learning.”

Workshop one runs from September 22 to24 and workshop two runs from September 25 to 27.
