Lions edge Bulls in tight contest
MAREEBA United were left frustrated on Saturday night after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Leichhardt Lions at Borzi Park.

In a closely contested FQPL Far North clash, the Bulls created opportunities but were unable to find a way through a disciplined Leichhardt defence that stood firm for the full 90 minutes.
The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when former state league player Bronson Koppen produced the game’s only goal. Koppen capitalised on his opportunity with a composed finish, giving the visitors a lead they would never relinquish.
Despite falling behind, Mareeba continued to press forward and enjoyed periods of possession as they searched for an equaliser. However, Leichhardt remained organised at the back, frustrating the Bulls’ attacking efforts and limiting the hosts to few clear-cut chances.
The result was a disappointing one for Mareeba, who had hoped to make home-ground advantage count in front of their supporters. While the Bulls showed plenty of determination and effort throughout the contest, they were unable to unlock the Lions’ resolute defensive structure.
For Leichhardt, it was another important three points built on defensive discipline and taking their chance when it mattered most.
Mareeba will now look to regroup quickly and turn their attention to this Sunday’s fixture at home against table-toppers Marlin Coast Rangers as they aim to bounce back and keep their season on track.
