ONE of Mareeba’s most respected members of the community Angelo Amante celebrated his 80th birthday and well-deserved retirement at the Mareeba Hospital last Thursday.

It was also a chance for the Mareeba Hospital to honour Mr Amante for his enormous contribution to Mareeba and the health industry more specifically. Mr Amante has an extensive resume in the pharmaceutical trade that spans decades, including running his own business from 1964-2007 where he operated as the sole pharmacist.

After his success trading as a community pharmacist for 43 years, Mr Amante would spend the remaining 11 years of his professional career locuming, critically providing services to the Mareeba Hospital as well as across Far North and Western Queensland.

Mr Amante’s impact in Mareeba was significant, and a colleague of his spoke about the lasting legacy he will leave on the industry.

“Angelo has been a crucial part of our team here at the hospital since 2008 when we were very fortunate to have him offer his services to our hospital after he sold his private business in 2007,” they said.

“In the early years when the pharmacy was still the sole practitioner-based service, Angelo was crucial in providing emergent leave cover to ensure that the pharmacy could operate and continue to provide essential services for our patients, for which I am extremely grateful for.

“It is a little hard to believe that 11 years have already passed by and for all of us within our team and across the hospital, I am sure you have enjoyed working with Angelo, as he not only has an admirable work ethic and level of professionalism all of us should aspire to, but he also has a great sense of humour which always made the challenging days a whole lot easier to get through.”

It’s clear to see the importance of Mr Amante’s work in Mareeba and right across Far North and Western Queensland, and now that he is enjoying retirement, it is a contribution that will be sorely missed.
