Malliff claims another Cup
MAREEBA trainer Alex Malliff ticked off another big win at the weekend after his horse Amalfi Amore took out the Mareeba Cup.
A large crowd turned out to the Mareeba Turf Club on Saturday, with fine weather providing perfect conditions for a day of racing.
The highlight of the event was the Mareeba Bracelet and Mareeba Cup, with each race offering $12,000 and $14,000 in prize money respectively.
Claiming the Bracelet was Trevor and Peter Rowe’s Yes Dream, ridden by Atherton jockey Lacey Morrison.
The well-backed $1.60 favourite led from the 800m mark all the way home, beating out Malliff’s Gamadale Nip by 0.36 lengths.
For the Cup, Maliff’s Heir Jordan and Amalfi Amore came in as favourites, paying $2.50 and $3 respectively. They were closely followed by Sharlee Hoffman’s Hurricane Rosie ($3.50) and Nippa’s Nightcap ($4).
But after coming down the home stretch, it was Amalfi Amore who broke away and crossed the finish line to finish 2.19 lengths in front of Mark Dale’s Inching Closer in second. Riding the winner was jockey Tasha Chambers.
The win caps off yet another success for Malliff, who was named Trainer of the Year following the end of the last racing season in July.
Turf Club president Aileen McDonald said she was very pleased with how the event played out.
“Racing in Mareeba has a strong history and days like this show why,” she said.
“It takes an engaged community, a big volunteer effort and the backing of partners like Sportsbet to put a card like this together and give racing in Far North Queensland a stage.
“We’re pleased with how the day came together and focused on making the next one even bigger.”
