Mareeba boxers show country grit
THREE local boxers showed true country toughness after finding dominant wins in their competitive bouts, with another showcasing great skill in his uncompetitive exhibition match.

Team Mareeba Boxing Club travelled to Cairns recently to compete in a regional boxing tournament, with three boxers matched for official bouts and a fourth taking part in an exhibition match.
Tristan Hollo was first up and delivered an impressive performance, winning his bout by unanimous decision. After using the first round to size up his opponent, Hollo dominated the next two rounds with a skilful display that secured him the win.
Next up was Will Calvert, who faced off against a strong opponent from Townsville. His determination and grit saw him edge out a very close and exciting victory in a thrilling back-and-forth contest.
Heavyweight Jamell Duck rounded out the Mareeba club’s winning streak with another unanimous decision. Duck’s superior fitness and skill were on full display as he controlled the fight from start to finish, leaving no doubt in the judges’ minds.
Matty Carroll was unable to secure a competitive bout due to his level of experience but stepped up for an exhibition match, giving away 10kg in weight to take on Daniel Burns of Cairns. The bout showcased the experience and technical skill of both fighters in a high-quality exhibition performance.
Coaches David Moloney, Ross Cardillo, Graham Wiernet and Austin Pell were thrilled with the results, saying the hard work and dedication the boxers have shown in training had really paid off.
Team Mareeba Boxing Club trains Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:30pm at their Abbott Street clubhouse. The club welcomes everyone, whether you’re looking to get fit, learn self-defence, or train to compete.
