Mareeba girls put up a fight in their big game

IT was an unfortunate result for the Mareeba Gladiators Under 15 Girls after they lost 36-16 to Cairns Kangaroos at the weekend’s Grand Final.


The Mareeba Gladiators Under 15 Girls were unable to come away with the win in their first ever Grand Final, however, they were happy for the experience.

Played at Barlow Park on Saturday, the Cairns side got off to hot start and scored two tries in the opening five minutes.

Mareeba soon struck back with their first try of the game through second rower Izobella Brix.

It was back and forth for the remainder of the first half as both teams scored another two tries each. For the Gladiators, it was Ainsley Martin (19th minute) and Madinah Bajramovic (35th minute) who crossed the tryline.

The score was 20-16 heading into the break.

The young Mareeba side, playing in their very first Grand Final, were ultimately overpowered in the second half.

The Kangaroos went on to score three more tries and were able to keep the Gladiators scoreless.

The game finished 36-16.
