Mareeba hopes to strike while the iron is hot
THE Mareeba Golf Club is confident ahead of their first Pennants match this weekend, with their “strongest team fielded in years” expected to be a force to be reckoned with for other clubs in the region.

The Mareeba GC is set to host the first round of the Pennants competition this Sunday, with the Half Moon Bay (Yorkey’s Knob), Southern Districts (El Arish, Tully, and Cardwell), and Innisfail golf club’s all contesting for points.
The Pennants event is a very competitive competition for clubs in the region, with the winners earning bragging rights over neighbouring clubs and claiming the winning flag to hang in their clubhouse.
Each club will field teams of five players across A Grade, B Grade, and C Grade divisions.
The Mareeba A Grade team, including reserves and in the absence of Dale Mattsson, will consist of Anthony Mete (captain), Jarrod France, Darrin Hastie, Michael Benjak, Paul O’Shea, and Danny Allen.
“It’s good to see a few old-timers come back to boost the squad, like Darrin and Benjak,” vice-president and greens director Michael France said.
“This is probably the strongest team we’ve fielded in years, and the boys seem fairly passionate about it, which is good to see.
“Our B Grade also looks strong, and C Grade is not too bad either, so we’re definitely looking forward to it.”
The Mareeba club has never won an A Grade Pennants competition, so they’re hoping to earn a first-placed flag this year. The club would also like to thank their long-time major sponsor PIMS for their ongoing support to the club and their Pennants teams.
Have a hit at Tradie Day
MAREEBA Golf Club is encouraging people to celebrate the end of the month with an afternoon out on the course at its popular Tradie Golf Day this week.
The nine-hole, two-ball Ambrose competition will kick off at 3.30pm this Friday, with players asked to arrive between 2.30pm-3pm for registration and to pay the $25 fee.
Those interested must RSVP by 4pm on Thursday by contacting the club on 4092 1528.
This month’s Tradie Day will be sponsored by RTS Concreting and there will be a range of prizes on offer.
Club vice-president and greens director Michael France encouraged all social golfers to come and enjoy the event, or the course in general.
“The course is in good nick after the rain we’ve had. I’d encourage all social players and everyone else to come out and have a hit on the freshened-up course,” he said.
