Mareeba to celebrate 150th anniversary
MAREEBA residents, associations and community groups are being asked to think about how they wish to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary next year.

“I urge residents to start thinking of the events and other celebration events and notable actions that can be held to mark our 150th year,” Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said.
Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Chair Joe Moro said this was a unique time for Mareeba to celebrate how far the community and businesses had come since 1877.
“This milestone rep-resents an ideal opportunity to showcase our shared appreciation for the efforts and achievements of those who came before us,”
he said.
Mayor Toppin said the centenary celebrations in 1977 provided the community with the start of the now iconic and popular Centenary Park at the southern approaches to the town.
“The community held events and came together to acknowledge the town’s 100 years of achievements,” she said.
“In the past 50 years, Mareeba has continued to grow and thrive, becoming the largest community in Far North Queensland outside Cairns.”
Mr Moro said that the Mareeba township and Shire was now home to people from more than 75 cultural backgrounds, contributing to a rich culture of acceptance, celebration, cohesion and diversity.
“I urge residents to start thinking about events, activities and other meaningful ways to mark our 150th year,” he said.
Residents, organisations, businesses and community groups are encouraged to contact the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce with their ideas via email admin@mareebachamber.com.au or call 4092 6050.
