Mareeba trainer claims Cup

IT was smiles all round for Mareeba trainer Alex Malliff and jockey Lauren Guernier when their horse Love On Sunday found a great win in the 2000m Atherton Cup at Saturday’s races.

Ms Guernier and her third-favourite horse (coming in at $4.20) edged out race favourite ($1.80) and Mareeba Cup winner Bold Feeling by a narrow margin of 0.06 lengths to claim the $12,600 first-place prize.

Before the big race, all eyes on were on Race 3 – the 1200m Open Handicap. It was the $1.70 favourite Valenki, trained by Roy Chillemi and ridden by jockey Lacey Morrison who took out first place to claim the $11,200 prize.

The winner of the 1000m Class B Handicap in Race 1 was Very Good – trained by John Kilroy and ridden by Lacey Morrison.

Race 2 – the 1200m Ratings Band 0-60 Handicap was taken out by Impardoo, who is trained by Bodine Bailey and was ridden by Lacey Morrison.

It’s Been A Trek claimed top spot in Race 4 – the Benchmark 50 Handicap. The $2.30 favourite was ridden by Krysten Swaffer and is trained by Janel Ryan.
