Missy honoured on special day

STUDENTS and staff at Malanda State High School came together last week to honour a past student whose life was sadly cut short in 2020 after battling aggressive cancers for a number of years.

Missy’s Donors Day is an annual event held at the school as a day of tribute for Missy, who lost her life to cancer when she was just 13 years old. It is also a day to celebrate and promote the fantastic efforts of her mother, Anj Mittelstadt, who raises awareness about blood donation and the cancer journey through the Missy’s Donors charity and the This Strong Mum Foundation.

This year, the school showed their love for Missy and her family by creating a large red heart on the school oval and raising over $1,900 for the two Missy’s Donors teams running in this year’s Great Wheelbarrow Race.

Missy’s passing has had a deep impact on the Malanda community and school, and has even led to locals achieving great things in tribute of her. Former Malanda High students, Kobi Johnston and Flynn Hyde, embodied that inspiration when they entered the Wheelbarrow Race in 2024 and smashed the duo record to honour their friend.
