Murder charge, Atherton
A 72-year-old Atherton man accused of murdering his wife early Sunday morning has appeared in the Mareeba Magistrates Court.
The 65-year-old woman, who died from apparent stab wounds to her abdomen, was discovered at a Gordon Street property by her son around 8.30am Sunday, according to police.
Cairns Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham told media on Monday that the man had been discovered on Byerstown Range, south-west of Cooktown, after a traffic accident.
“He was found on the road there with minor injuries by Cooktown police who took him into custody and he was then taken to Mareeba,” he said.
Inspect Chetham said there were no reports of yelling or arguing by neighbours prior to the incident which police believe occurred just before 7am on Sunday.
