The Tolga Historical Society will host an official opening of the recently completed extension to the museum’s Greg Mulley Military Building on Sunday 21 June, with Member for Hill, Shane Knuth, doing the honours.

President of the Tolga Historical Society, Richard Standen, said the improved facilities would be a welcoming space and would also enhance the organisation’s sustainability.

“The new climate-controlled extension would safely house sensitive military artefacts, create a comfortable and welcoming space for research into the museum’s military archives, and offer access to online research tools supported by experienced museum volunteers,” Mr Standen said.

Volunteer, military historian and member of the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (Qld), John Hardy OAM, said improving access at the museum helped the community stay engaged with its rich history.

“The scale of the role that the Tolga region played in the Pacific engagement of WWII was enormous,” he said.

“The Tolga Museum has experienced growing demand for assistance with service records research, alongside increased visitation to our facility and nearby historical sites.

“This extension allows veterans, volunteers, and visitors to enjoy the Museum’s support and camaraderie in a more comfortable environment.”

The museum will be open for visitors to browse throughout the day, with highlights including a vintage car display, a sausage sizzle, coffee van, the Girl Guides providing morning and afternoon tea treats and market stalls.

The opening will be held from between 10am and 3pm. Visitor parking on the day will be off Lawson St.
