New courts freshen look
FIVE brand new courts were officially unveiled at the Mareeba Tennis Club recently.

The club has been part of the community for over 80 years, however, as concrete started to lift and crack, and with grass in between the courts posing a risk for injury, the club was told it needed upgrading.
Club president Mark Keating said it had been a long time coming getting the upgrades delivered, with the official unveiling of the new courts also falling on his birthday, which was “a really good present”.
“It’s unbelievable. We’re already starting to find people are enjoying it more because the experience is better. It’s 100% on what we used to have, so it’s great to have these new courts,” he said.
“However, the job is only half done. We’d really love to have new courts right across the whole facility. At the moment we’ve got both old and new courts here, so it’s a little bit frustrating for us as a club but we’ll get there one day.
“The new courts will allow us to expand our junior development programs, host regional tournaments, and offer more inclusive access for players of all ages and abilities.”
In attendance at the opening was member for Cook David Kempton, Mareeba Shire Deputy Mayor Lenore Wyatt and Councillor Amy Braes, as well as representatives from the state government, Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank, and Tennis Queensland.
Key funders for the project included the Queensland Government minor infrastructure grant, Mareeba Tennis Club, Bendigo Community Bank, Tennis Queensland, and Mareeba Shire Council.
