New era for recycle shop
THE former Atherton Recycle Market may come alive again after Tablelands Regional Council agreed to accept expressions of interest for a recycle or reuse business to operate from the now empty shed at the town’s transfer station.

The Endeavour Foundation operated the recycle market from the building for the past 10 years but shut its doors in April.
“This was a fantastic service but, despite strong community support, the costs significantly outweighed the revenue and the facility closed down earlier this year,” Mayor Rod Marti said.
“We’ll be inviting third parties to express their interest to operate a recycling business from the now-vacant building, and allow council to select the most beneficial proposals before calling for tenders.
“The business could include recycling of lead or lithium batteries, high-value metals from white goods and appliances, metals from mattresses, components from IT and electronic devices, gas bottles, timber or waste oils.
“Or the business or organisation might reinstate recycling and reselling as per the building’s previous use.”
Mayor Marti said the EOI would require applicants to demonstrate benefits to the community either by directly supporting the community, or indirectly by diverting landfill or paying dividends to the council.
Expressions of interest will be invited in the coming weeks.
