New tech helping farmers

WITH recent rainfall turning many local farms into waterlogged fields that are susceptible to varying degrees of damage when traversed by heavy farm equipment, an increasing number of local farmers are using modern technology to attend to their crop production and maintenance timetables.

An increasing number of lychee and other farmers across the Tablelands and Mareeba Dimbulah regions are utilising drones as part of their crop maintenance procedures as relatively new technology is replacing former practices.
An increasing number of lychee and other farmers across the Tablelands and Mareeba Dimbulah regions are utilising drones as part of their crop maintenance procedures as relatively new technology is replacing former practices.

One of those farmers is Emerald Creek lychee producer Mladen Bosnic who has used local drone company Overwatch Drone Services to spray his five-hectare lychee cropping area in a relatively short time.

“I have been interested in this new cropping maintenance development for some time, and compared it to crop misting that I had used in previous seasons,” Mr Bosnic said.

“So I contacted Jack Brooking and found drone spraying to be more efficient, specifically targeted, especially against new foliage grubs and other crop pests and therefore more cost effective,” Mr Bosnic said.
