Parking fines set to increase

PARKING officers will be able to fine more motorists who linger too long in Byrnes Street or in the Kuranda CBD, with Mareeba Shire planning to implement a much quicker and more efficient way of issuing parking infringements.

Officers have issued 81 parking infringements over the past quarter, up on the 64 issued for the same period last year, but that is likely to in-crease again once officers begin to use a new electronic machine and process for issuing parking fines. The change is expected to start this month.

Currently overstaying in parking bays incurs a $43 fine, with loading zones infringements costing $71. Parking is a disabled bay without a permit incurs a $287 fine.

A council report noted that parking patrols in both Mareeba and Kuranda had been reinstated.
