Communities all over the country pause on 11 November each year to honour fallen heroes whose lives were laid down in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

On the morning of November 11th in Compiègne, France, an armistice was reached between the Allies and Germany, declaring a cessation to hostilities on the western front effective the 11th hour, of the 11th of day, of the 11th month.

Malanda’s twilight ceremony has particular significance, with the minute’s silence at 7pm being simultaneous to when millions of French citizens will pause at 11am in their country.

Before this service, from 5pm-6.30pm, a lone piper will play a lament in the Eacham Memorial Gates Park while the local Lions Club host a sausage sizzle.

“The Sub Branch encourages everyone to take a moment, whether at a service, at work, at school, or in quiet reflection, to remember those who served and sacrificed for the ideals of peace and freedom that define our nation,” Malanda RSL Sub Branch committee member Glynn Morice said.

“No matter how you choose to commemorate Remembrance Day, all we really ask is that you remember to remember.”

Ceremonies will be held across the Tablelands in Mareeba, Mt Molloy, Atherton, Malanda, Herberton and Ravenshoe. Details of services are as follows:

Mareeba Cenotaph (126 Byrnes St) from 10.45am

Mt Molloy Memorial Hall (29 Main St) from 10.45am

Atherton War Memorial in Anzac Park (Main St) from 10.45am
