Ravenshoe to celebrate a century of QCWA

ONE hundred years of the Queensland Country Women’s Association having a presence in Ravenshoe will be celebrated next month, but organisers want help from locals.

The celebration is set to kick off at the town’s QCWA Hall on 21 October with a High Tea around 2.30pm, but hall convener Riki Gunn is asking anyone who may have pictures or stories about the branch and its members to come forward now.

“Some would say that the Ravenshoe branch doesn’t deserve to celebrate our 100-year history because we had a temporary cessation of activities during Covid,” she said.

“Of course, we disagree because during that period our hall was always open for bookings.

“It is not the size of its membership that defines a branch. Nor is it the number or continuity of meetings held. These are simply the gears that make it work.

“What defines a branch is its community. And there can be no doubt that the Ravenshoe Branch of the QCWA has the wholehearted support of the local community, and always has had.

“Our wonderful hall is testament to that. Our hall was crafted by members’ families. Within our hall there are handmade tables, tablecloths and other keepsakes lovingly created by former members.

“There are the records and photos of important events in our 100-year history. Every item has a story and some connection to families within our community.

“But now we need your help. We know that tucked away in shoe boxes in the back of closets there will be so much more history of our branch and its members. We need those photos and stories, for it is these that showcase how embedded the QCWA Ravenshoe Branch is in our community.”

If you have any items, please contact the branch so they can arrange to copy or collect them. Email the branch at ravenshoebranch@qcwa.org.au
