The Atherton State High School student and school captain set blistering times of 49.73s in the 400m and 1m 56.23s in the 800m events.

“It felt pretty damn good because I’ve been training very hard for it and to finally see the PBs I’ve been working for was very good,” he said.

“I was lost for words a little bit when I crossed the line and saw the time. I don’t think anyone’s ever done those times, even in the older age groups.”

Kattenberg said holding a record had always been something he had his eyes on.

“It’s not a thought of mind, but there’s always been that little thing in the back of my head that if I could just get my name in the record books once, even it’s just for a day, that would be cool,” he said.

The young athlete has had a busy month. Last week, he headed down to compete at the North Queensland Championships in Townsville, this week he is off to Brisbane for the Queensland Athletics All Schools competition to represent Atherton High, and then he will be competing in Townsville on 16 October at the Queensland Representative School Sport competition – the next step after his Peninsula wins.

Kattenberg hopes to make it onto the national stage once again, but he’s more focused on his effort.

“I’d love to make it to nationals. I’ve made it there before, but it’s racing, you never know what’s going to happen,” he said.

“I like to try and do the best I can. Hopefully that resolves in me making it to nationals. But if I go out and just run a PB, I’m happy with that.”
