Reef rules under review

COMMERCIAL sugarcane and banana growers, and cattle producers are being urged to have their say on a review of environmentally relevant activity (ERA) in the Great Barrier Reef catchment.

Member for Cook, David Kempton, said farmers, industry peak bodies, and anyone with an interest in these regulations should take the time to let the State Government review know about the impacts the regulations have on their livelihoods.

“Have your say on the ERA standards, prescribed methodologies, and supporting guides that apply to commercial sugarcane, banana cultivation, and beef cattle grazing in the Great Barrier Reef catchment,” he said.

“Input ... is vital to ensure they remain practical, relevant, and evidence-based.”

The review team wants to hear about whether parts of the regulated standards are difficult to understand and hard to comply with, and whether recent studies or projects ensure the standards remain evidence-based and current with industry practices that minimise nutrient and sediment run-off.

Mr Kempton said the review would not be looking to change legislative framework, such as offence provisions.

Public consultation closes Friday, 8 August.
