Reel in a win with a Barra
PLENTY of prizes including a $10,000 tagged barra, a $1,000 tagged sooty grunter, and the chance to win your weight in beer will be all the buzz at a fishing competition this weekend at Lake Tinaroo.

The Tableland Fish Stocking Society is holding a tagged fishing competition where just two fish have been tagged and are worth tens of thousands of dollars.
This competition is being held in line with the group’s regular weekend comp which has several prize categories itself, including longest total length barra, largest barra, largest barra caught by a female, largest barra caught by a junior, a mystery length barra, largest sooty, and largest catfish caught by a junior.
However, the tagged competition will run until both fish are caught, “even if it takes up to five years”, according to group president Doug Luscombe.
There are plenty of other prizes on offer as well, including the chance to literally win your weight in beer. If you’re the winner of this raffle, you’ll be asked to hop on the scales and be given enough beer to match your weight.”
There’ll also be redclaw races, a fishing charter raffle, a barra display, and other novelty events.
Cairns duo band Stone Alley will be providing live entertainment as attendees enjoy the bar on offer.
“It’s going to be great. We’re a volunteer-run organisation and our primary purpose is to stock Tinaroo with prize barra and sooty grunter,” Mr Luscombe said.
“So by coming along, you’re supporting us to keep being able to stock the dam with these fish. I’d encourage everyone to come along.”
The competition will begin this Friday from 6pm, with nominations opening at 12pm the same day. Fishing for the weekend comp will end at 6pm on Saturday and will be followed by presentations and entertainment.
The event is open for anyone who’d like to enter. For more information or to register, visit www.tablelandsfishstockingsociety.com.au/tfss-fishing-comp-form/
