Remembering our firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS, police, RAAF representatives, paramedics and many others gathered on Friday for the Firefighters’ Remembrance Day Memorial Service to honour those who had lost their lives.

In a sobering and moving service at the St George Anglican Church in Mareeba, RFSQ Savannah District Superintendent Adrian Stafford told the service that 60 firefighters were on the Queensland Honour Roll, and their “names stay with us”.

“They paid the ultimate sacrifice to lay down their lives for their communities.”

Dating back to 1877 through to 2023, each firefighter’s name was read out, followed by a haunting toll of a firefighter’s bell.

The Firefighters Prayer was recited by attendees, which in part asks, “Help us to embrace a little child, before it is too late. Or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable us to be alert and hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently put the fire out.”

The service, which attracted more than 80 people, also held a series of 30-second moments of silence for retired firefighters who had passed, firefighters who had passed while not on duty, and staff members who had died.

Wreaths were laid, accompanied by a minute’s silence, with hyms and prayer ending the memorial service.
