Retreat makes the most of Koah
A NEW nature-based retreat in Koah approved by Mareeba Shire Council will feature, trail walks, hiking, bird watching, star gazing, swimming and kayaking in the Clohesy River.
The proposal would also provide yoga, meditation and spa treatments for visitors staying at the property at 117 Cedar Pak Road.
The retreat will replace a former chiropractic clinic which operated from the 1980s.
Property owner Shuying Ding planned to provide “a private, nature-focused retreat in the densely forested site”, the report said.
The operation would have four cabins with a total of five rooms and an amenities block, and will cater to families, solo travellers, couples, adventure seekers and wellness enthusiasts.
It would incorporate previous infrastructure from the former chiropractic and wellness clinic which included a dwelling, caretaker accommodation, a treatment room and an associated short-term accommodation building.
The council report went on to state that the retreat would offer overnight stays, short retreats, adventure hubs and educational programs.
Giving the proposal the green light at its June meeting, council agreed the maximum stay at the retreat would be up to seven days, with a stipulation that it did not cater for day visitors.
In the development application assessment, council officers advised the retreat did not compromise any primary industries in the rural zone, as it was well buffered by mature vegetation. Nor would it affect the lifestyle, character and scenic qualities of area.
Council officers noted: “The tail end of Cedar Park Road is a hub for tourist development including the Cedar Park Resort, Valley View Naturist Retreat (caravan park) and the former Barrier Reef Sun Club (now closed). The area also welcomes a large number of day visitors to the nearby Clohesy River swimming areas and Curtain Fig Tree situated at the end of Clohesy River Road.”
The development was placed on public notification but no submissions were received.
