Roll up to roller derby showcase
THE excitement of roller derby is rolling back into the spotlight as the Cairns and Tableland Roller Derby leagues join forces for a special Family and Friends Scrimmage Day this weekend.
The event, to be held this Sunday at the Atherton State High School hall, will bring together two volunteer-run leagues in a showcase of Short Track Roller Derby.
This will give skaters opportunities to compete against neighbouring leagues, while working together to strengthen and grow the sport across the region.
Attendees will have the chance to watch three levels of roller derby, some with juniors and all open gender. Fast-paced, strategic and full of big hits, roller derby is said to be one of the most exciting spectator sports.
The leagues are also bringing back the old-school roller derby spectacle, with colourful uniforms, creative make-up, team rollouts, and plenty of personality planned to be on display.
“Newcomers will be given an instructional demonstration so they can appreciate how the fast-paced, full-contact sport works,” event organiser Jennifer Cox said.
“Whether you’re a lifelong sports fan, curious about roller derby, or simply looking for a fun family day out, everyone is invited to come along, cheer on the local skaters and help support the continued growth of roller derby in Far North Queensland.”
The Family and Friends Scrimmage Day will kick off at 12pm. Entry is just $10, however, children under 12 are free. There will also be a bake sale with plenty of tasty treats available.
