The Atherton-based plumber, who has been operating for more than 50 years, has been awarded the Queensland Master Plumbers Association Meritorious Service Award. Master Plumbers Association of Queensland board member Bob Kimlin presented the award and congratulated Roy for his overall contribution to the industry.

“Over his years in business, Roy has employed and trained 15 apprentices, with the large majority currently owning their own business,” he said.

Roy has seen a lot of developments in the industry over the last 50 years. He said plumbers greatly appreciated the use of PVC, and the use of machinery digging septic tank holes and trenches, which he recalls were previously dug by pick and shovel, at the rate of 10/- ($1) for a septic tank hole and septic trenches dug @ 2/- shillings (20 cents) per foot.

He said safety standards with the use of edge protection for roof installation, harness and other personal protection equipment now make high-rise building work much safer.

“With some of the risks plumbers took in the past, It’s a wonder we are still around,” he said.

Roy said there was no doubt his MPAQ membership had contributed greatly to his success in plumbing, extending well beyond traditional day-to-day plumbing, to the meeting of statutory requirements and ultimately giving members peace of mind in the running of their business.

Roy says he is extremely grateful for the further development of his plumbing business being handled by son Trevor as they together continue to contribute to the Industry.
