Second farm for Domigo
WHAT started as a quantum change in career paths four years ago has transformed a farm near Dimbulah, a Mareeba coffee retail outlet and associated branding and market share, and led to a recent expansion to a second farm for now well-known coffee couple Stephen and Natalie Curtis.

Moving from their property on the Central Highlands, the third generation primary producers have transformed Australia’s oldest coffee growing plantation at Walsh Road near Dimbulah, which started producing commercially in 1982, into a family farming enterprise that is committed to continuing the legacy of naturally processed, delicious-tasting coffee.
“We were looking for a farm that was located in the sub-tropical area of the Far North that was ideally located at a certain elevation and one that had arable soils suited to coffee production and a farm that had a proved long standing coffee production history,”
From working in their expansive plantation paddocks all the way to sales and despatch, the Curtis family keeps a watchful eye on all facets of quality coffee production – grading, roasting, blending and taste – in order to produce the best possible quality Australian-grown coffee, farm sustainability, and product market reliability.
The Domigo Coffee experience is backed by three generations of Curtis family farming experience who work together to ensure they produce the best possible coffee product.
The familiar Domigo Coffee logo, which the family developed is now one of the region’s most recognisable images and their retail outlet, which includes a laneway shop and roastery at 2/165 Byrnes Street in Mareeba, draws hundreds of local customers each week.
“If they wish, new customers can try our coffee on site or at local outlets including Café Trieste, Mareeba Deli or Savannah Café at Mareeba Heritage Centre,” Natalie Curtis said.
To add to the Domigo Coffee versatility, the Curtis family also has trialled a relatively new “Cold Brew”, a unique product that is refrigerator stored and ensures that coffee lovers of all kinds can further add to their coffee enjoyment experience.
Local coffee shops and retailers and an ever expanding online ordering clientele confirms the expanding market share for the locally produced Domigo Coffee.
In more recent times, this has led to the Curtis family acquiring another farming property near Dimbulah to keep up with confirmed market share and coffee production to meet clearly indicated future coffee growing demand for the family’s blends and other products.
If you are walking on the eastern side of Byrnes Street in the Mareeba CBD, the laneway outlet for Domigo Coffee is easily found – just follow the pleasant, distinctive aroma of their on site, freshly roasted coffee, and you’re there.
Ever proud of her many and varied coffee blends, Natalie said, “We aim to share our love for this land through our own coffee, however, when people think of single-origin specialty coffee they don’t always think of Australia, but the way Domigo Coffee is going, we reckon we can change that.
“We fully support the move to establish Mareeba as ‘The Coffee Capital of Australia’, and rightly so, it seems,” she added.
