Shaky start to Atherton’s season
ATHERTON Cricket Club is struggling to find its feet early in the season after taking their second loss at the weekend.

The local club hosted the Cyclones on Saturday and after the visitors put up a big score of 200 runs, the home side only managed to chase half that before they were all out.
The Cyclones’ opening batsmen, captain Jasran Kalkat and Ranvir Singh, set the tone for their side, with Kalkat scoring 48 off 58 balls and Singh tallying up 71 runs from 98 balls.
Vice-captain Luke McAvoy also significantly contributed with his 54 runs off 51 balls. The visitors finished their innings 8/200. Atherton bowler Matthew Coleman found success, however, taking three wickets in his eight overs.
The home side were slow off the mark in the second innings, with opening batsmen Alex Nasser and Tom Boorman totalling just 10 runs between themselves.
However, Logan Poggioli and Brendan Nasser soon built a productive partnership, with Poggioli scoring 20 from 24 and Nasser 22 from 41. Atherton couldn’t regain momentum following their departure though, with Lachlan Hollitt being the only other batsmen to crack double figures (13 from 26).
Cyclones bowler Nosaina Pokana wreaked havoc on the bottom-order batsmen, taking out Reece Johnston (2 from 13) and then delivering a final blow with a golden duck to Matthew Colemand and a duck to Riley Lennon. Atherton were all out for 100 runs after 25.3 overs.
Next week they will enjoy a bye while the Mareeba Bandits return from their bye round to take on the Barron River Cricket Club in Trinity Beach from 12.30pm on Saturday.
