Signs, signs and more signs

THE blight of dilapidated, outdated or obsolete road tourist signs continues to challenge the Department of Transport and Main Roads as it conducts its audit across the Mareeba Shire.

Reporting to the Mareeba Sire Council Traffic Advisory Committee meeting in December, TMR advised most business owners had been contacted about signage and were renewing their permits, putting up new, updated signs or taking them down if no longer needed.

However, TMR acknowledged its Corridor team – which was reviewing tourist/service/business signs within a 14km radius of Mareeba – was “taking some time”.

“There are a lot of signs, and for each the team is confirming whether the sign has current or expired approval, whether the sign is consistent with current signage policies and requirements, and the current condition of each sign,” the TAC report said.

Speaking at the January council meeting to approve the TAC minutes report, Deputy Mayor Lenore Wyatt said the push to remove old or obsolete tourism signs also needed a push from residents.

“It’s really important when we have tourists come up that we have our signs clean and well looked after, so if anyone does come across a tourist sign (they’re usually the brown ones) and you think they need reporting, please get on to us,” she said.

“We’ll ship that (information) off to Main Roads and they then have to follow them up to either get them updated or corrected or removed, as some are still there from old tourist ventures.”

TMR advised it would continue to progress through the list and provide an update to TAC and Council.
