Site chosen for new facility
A LOCATION for the proposed Malanda multi-purpose building has been approved.

The multi-purpose building will be built after council decided to demolish the Patrick English Pavilion at the Malanda Showgrounds.
But it will not be built on the same spot – it will be constructed on the south-eastern side of the arena and sporting fields where the current grandstand is located.
A report to Tablelands Regional Council advised that the location was “the most practical, cost-effective and community-focused option identified through the site options analysis process”.
“Positioning the facility within the main activity area of the showgrounds is likely to make best use of existing infrastructure such as access roads, utilities and surrounding facilities,” the report from consultants stated.
“This approach can help reduce the need for duplicated infrastructure and support more efficient long-term operation and maintenance costs.
“The location is also well placed to support a wide range of community uses, including sporting events, agricultural shows, markets and other gatherings already held at the showgrounds.
“Its proximity to these established activity areas is expected to improve convenience for users, encourage greater use of the facility and strengthen the Malanda Showgrounds as a central community hub.”
Council has not given any timeframe for the new centre which depends on securing funding for the new facility.
