MAREEBA bowls enthusiast Sue Brady has won her first ever Australian Open after competing on the Gold Coast over the last weekend of June.

The Australian Open is the biggest bowls competition in Australia and even attracts players from outside the country to participate.

Teams from all around the country nominated themselves to compete this year in a series of different divisions and age groups.

Sue and her doubles partner had been paired up before and retuned unsuccessful, however this year they gelled well and took home gold in the Over-60s Women’s Pairs.

“We beat the defending champions from two years ago,” Sue said.

“I have been away for this competition quite often and have never won.

“Now we will be looking to return next year to defend our title.”

Sue felt very proud to have won considering it was a tough match against the defending champions.

“We led most of the way except for the 13th end where they got in front by one,” Sue said.

It was all up to Sue on her last bowl to secure the victory where she dragged the jack and secured two points to win the game.
