A TRY in the final seconds has helped the Atherton Roosters lock up a 18 all draw with the Mareeba Gladiators in their preseason first grade rugby league trial at Mareeba on Saturday night.

Saturday’s trial marked both teams first appearance in twelve months and there was a strong crowd at Davies Park.

It was the Gladiators who surprised the Roosters defence early, with captain/coach Trent Barnard slicing through to open the scoring after only two minutes of play.

Minutes later the Gladiators went over again and now led 12-0. The Roosters got over the line for their first four pointer just before the break and the sides went to halftime with the Gladiators up 12-4.

Soon after the restart the Gladiators crossed for another try to push the score out to 18-4. The visitors then surged back into the contest with three unanswered tries to lock up the final score at 18 all.

Winger Ty Grogan’s try in the corner as the final seconds counted down gave Atherton a sniff of victory but his attempted conversion of his own try from the sideline was waved away.

In reserve grade, the Roosters finished 16-8 winners over Mareeba. Earlier the Gladiators under 18 side won their trial 6-0 against Mossman Scorpions.

This Saturday the Roosters play pre-season trials at home with the first grade side playing the Herbert River Crushers and the under 18 side up against Mossman Scorpions.

Pre-season trials also continue for the Mareeba Gladiators this Saturday who travel to Vico Oval for three games with Kangaroos.
