Gladiators gear up for 2021 season
THE Mareeba Gladiators are looking ahead to the 2021 season with some new signings to bolster their ranks and improve on their core foundation.
The 2020 season was cut
off before it even started with
the touchdown of COVID.
The Gladiators were only able to get a trial game in against town rivals, the Atherton Roosters which resulted in a draw.
Now with Australia returning to normal, the fight is on for the 2021 Cairns District Rugby League Premiership.
Returning Gladiators Captain/Coach Trent Barnard is excited to be get back onto the field in 2021.
“We are looking good this season, we recruited well and a bunch of boys are coming back,” he said.
“A few others are jumping on board and it’s going to make our squad a lot stronger.
“We are hoping to get people through the gates and play some good footy.”
The Gladiators will keep a strong core as many players will be returning with some added extras including Clint Posselt who has returned to his old stomping ground.
“I touched down in Cairns in May and was itching to play, I heard Trent was coaching and that they had a good core of players back,” Clint said.
“Trent did a great job getting everyone back and keen so it was unfortunate that COVID came, but it’s good we have that base already.
“I’m really excited with the players we have and the coach, so I think we can do pretty good things next year.”
The 2021 pre-season will kick off in January with training and other trial matches to give the Gladiators a chance to sharpen their swords before heading into the 2021 season.
