THE Mareeba Gladiators will be hoping to put forth a better performance when they take on the Innisfail Leprechauns at Davies Park tomorrow night.

While the Gladiators’ chemistry on the weekend struggled at times, they were able to match the Roosters’ two second-half tries, which is sure to give them confidence heading into tomorrow's all-important first home game.

It is going to be a tough test for the Gladiators, whose opponents Innisfail are coming off a narrow win on the weekend over defending premiers Mossman Sharks.

Mareeba Gladiators A-Grade captain Trent Barnard said his side learnt a lot from their first round loss to the Roosters.

“We played really poorly against Atherton on the weekend,” he said.

“We were all disappointed with the result, particularly considering how hard everyone worked during the pre-season and how well we played in the trial a couple of weeks ago.”

“But on the weekend I think we only completed one set in the first half, so you can’t do that and expect to win, especially in the wet and against a good side like Atherton.”

Barnard said the squad were rightly put through their paces on Tuesday for their performance on the weekend.

“We were flogged at training for how we played,” he said.

“But it has been good for us as we had a long chat about what we need to improve on and all the boys are raring to go for our first home game of the season.

“It will be a good test for us this Saturday, Innisfail are always a strong side and they have plenty of size in the middle, so that will be a good opportunity for our young forwards to step up.”

Barnard said his side is hoping to put on a good display for the home fans in what is shaping up to be a hard-fought match-up.

For those interested in attending, the A-Grade fixture will kick off at 6:00pm.

In addition to the games, tomorrow will also act as the Mareeba Gladiators Sponsor’s Night and will be held upstairs in the clubhouse.
