MAREEBA will remain silent and absent from the sounds of basketball after the Mareeba Basketball Association came to the decision to cancel their 2020 season.

The decision came at their general meeting last fortnight, July 23, after consultation with players and supporters the decision was made to cancel the season.

After one of the biggest starts to their season in years it is a regretful decision to have to cancel the season but Mareeba Basketball Association President Mark Wuth wanted to prioritise player health and safety.

“In the end the committee got together and looked at all the pros and cons and we decided to call it for this year and put everything into next year,” he said.

“It’s not a position we want to be in, we all want to play but we felt it was the right decision for our club.

“The indication that we’ve had along the way is that our players have understood our decision.”

The majority of the 2020 basketball season had already passed with them only getting in a few games before everything was shut down due to COVID-19.

Even though the 2020 season is cancelled Mr Wuth assures players that the committee is “very keen to get back up and running as soon as we can.”

“The intention is that we will be kicking off as we normally do around the February period,” he said.

“That will depend on what is happening at the time as well.

“The committee will continue to meet over this period and we will look at the new season.”
