THE Atherton Roosters and Cairns Kangaroos battled it out in round 15 of the Cairns District Rugby League premiership on Saturday night at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

It was the Roosters who finished 36-12 winners with doubles to Nigel Woodleigh, Pio Seci and Ned Blackman.

Kangaroos looked in control early in the match as they enjoyed the majority of possession and found themselves on the right side of the penalty count. This helped Kangaroos cross for two tries and a 12-6 lead at the break.

But it was the Roosters who returned to the park full of running and soon had Kangaroos on the ropes as they delivered thirty unanswered points on the back of some strong defence.

Roosters Fijian International Pio Seci is set to become a crowd favourite after his entertaining performance which included a long range try scoring effort. Centre Nigel Woodleigh was also full of speed and found plenty open spaces out wide.

A treble to Darren Ball and a double to both Tony Woodleigh and Darcey Taylor highlighted in the Roosters reserve grade sides 64-4 win over Kangaroos.

The Roosters went over for eleven tries after leading 36-4 at halftime.

Kangaroos forfeited the under 18 match to Atherton.

The Senior Roosters host Cairns Brothers in another home game this Saturday, July 27.

The club have joined the quest to defeat brain cancer and are holding a “Beanies for Brain Cancer” day in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation.

Supporters at Saturday’s game will be encouraged to purchase a beanie for $25 and wear while cheering for the Roosters and also supporting a great cause.
