School athletes set to test limits
ST Stephen’s Catholic College will see three of its star athletes off to Perth for the Australian All-Schools Athletics Championships this weekend.
ST Stephen’s Catholic College will see three of its star athletes off to Perth for the Australian All-Schools Athletics Championships this weekend.
Natalie Millerd, Sophie Raciti and Luke McLellan will be joining Mareeba State High School student Leon Grundling to compete in their respective divisions this weekend against talent from across the county.
Over 800 athletes will be competing in the three day championships from December 6 to 8.
Natalie will be competing in the U16 multiclass in Shot Put and Discus.
Sophie will be throwing in the Hammer, Discus and Shot Put events for the U18 division while Luke is in the 400m and Relay track events.
Both Sophie and Luke have been working hard over many years to get to this moment and are looking forward to competing.
“It feels amazing to not only represent Queensland but just the opportunity is amazing,” Sophie said.
“This has been one of my goals since I first started training when I was 13.
“I’m nervous but also very excited, there will be lots of challenges for me there.”
Luke is excited about the championship feeling years of hard work and effort haven’t gone to waste.
“It feels really good to qualify since I’ve been training for such a long time,” he said.
“This has been a goal of mine for many years ever since I started training three years ago, I’ve been doing athletics for eight years but only started training seriously these past three years.
“I will definitely be challenged as I am competing in a higher age group and I’m competing against the best in the country.”
All athletes would like to thank their support groups including their trainers, friends and families for supporting them through the journey to this championship.
